Course Description

Stories have the power to change the way we think, act, and feel. This course will teach you how to start telling your stories through the medium of digital filmmaking.

The initial three sessions will give you a basic understanding of the filmmaking process through quick, fun, hands-on activities. First, we will focus on pre-production and learn how to generate ideas, write quick scripts, and storyboard scenes using smartphones. Next, we will concentrate on production and cover directing, lighting, and cinematography basics by working with professional Canon cameras. Finally, we will learn about post-production and how to edit and share a film using Apple computers and Final Cut Pro X. The final two sessions will give you the opportunity to come together as a team and produce one short film.

Each class session will have a bias toward action. During our time together, you won’t spend much time in your chairs or listening to lectures; you will be engaged in hands-on learning experiences around the digital filmmaking process.

No previous filmmaking experience is required. Cameras, laptops, and software will be provided for in-class use. Access to a smartphone or tablet is needed for certain assignments and activities.

How to activate storytelling.

We are wired for story. Therefore, it is not something we need to learn—but rather something we need to simply activate.

This short activity helps students activate their storytelling abilities in a quick, fun and team-building exercise.
